Abu Dharr Admonishes…

I find Abu Dharr al-Ghafaari one of the most interesting personalities from among the Sahaaba. He was known for his asceticism and admonitions. It is narrated in Abu Na`im’s al-Hilyah that someone asked Abu Dharr, radhiallahu `anhu, "O Abu Dharr, why do people leave your company upset every time they visit you?" He replied, "They leave upset because I admonish them against hoarding the treasures of this world."

The following is one of his admonitions narrated by Sufyaan ath-Thawree, raHimahullaah, as related in al-Hilyah of Abu Na`im:

"O people, I am Jandab’ul Ghafaari. Come here and hearken to the good advice of your compassionate older brother. " Immediately, people hastened and stood around him to hear what he had to say. Abu Dharr then said, "Do you see, when one of you plans to travel, doesn’t he prepare himself and takes with him the needed provisions that will suffice him until he reaches his destination?" The people replied, "Indeed, he does." Abu Dharr continued, "In this regard, the road to the Day of Reckoning is the furthest of your ultimate destinations. Take with you what benefit you most." The people asked, "And what do you consider as most beneficial for such a journey?"

Abu Dharr replied:

1) Make a pilgrimage to Mecca for your dire needs;

2) fast in the hottest day in contemplation of the horrific age-old standing of the Day of Resurrection;

3) pray two rak`at in the darkness of the night in contemplation of one’s bewilderment, loneliness, and darkness of his grave;

4) either say something good, or remain silent pondering on awesome age-long standing in the grim silence of the Day of Resurrection;

5) spend your money in charity, so perhaps you can escape its trials;

6) make this world a setting for two types of conferences: One to seek the benefits of the hereafter, and the other to seek what is permissible. Should there be a third criteria of meetings, they will be of harm and of no benefit to you; and finally,

7) look to your money and divide it in two categories: One dirham you spend on your family, the second you spend for your benefits in the hereafter, and should there be left a third dirham, it will be of harm and of no benefit to you."

Abu Dharr then shouted at the top of his voice: "O people! Your craving to accumulate what is beyond your reach will surely destroy you."

Eloquent and frightening reminders. Jazakallahu Khair.

Bismillah

Masha Allaah, jazakallah for such a nice reminder. Abu Darr al Ghafaari radiallhuanhu was indeed a Zahid to the core.

If I recall correctly, people got so scared of his preachings, that he was replaced as a governer or send to some other town.

Plus despite the Prophet sallhu alhu wassalam asking him to stay away from proclaiming his faith at the Ka'ba he did precisely that and was beaten black and blue.

Hope these facts are correct. Surprisingly i am asking more questions than i should. khair...

Abu Darr was mentioed in the hadith was said to have acceoted Islam alone, lived alone and will be raised up alone.

What does Zahid mean?
it's someone who doesn't care about this Dunya at all and avoid it as much as he can, all he cares about it his relationship with Allah.

for example he wouldn't go and buy furniture and he will use the minimum that he have to do the purpose, he wouldn't care about looks and accessory (of course he will care to be clean and tidy)

he wouldn't go and buy food as long as he has something that make him survive for the day.

so he doesn't care about anything from this dunya, all he cares about is the porpose of him being created which is worshipping Allah.

or at least that's what i think Zahid is.

Abu Darr was mentioed in the hadith was said to have acceoted Islam alone, lived alone and will be raised up alone.

It was Mu'awiyi who got scared of his Zuhd. AbuDharr went to him in the sham and told him that he shouldn't live this way, in large castles with lots of riches etc... So he wrote to 'Uthman telling him that Abu Dhar is causing trouble for him. He went back to the madina and discussed his opinion with 'Uthman. Abu Dhar would not back down on this issue of governors being rich so 'Uthman told him to leave the madina. He wanted the governing to be the same as at the time of 'Umar and Abu Bakr but that wasn't going to happen with all the riches pouring into the Muslim ummah.

The prophet said, "May Allah be merciful on AbuDharr, He will live alone, He will die alone and He will be raised (on the day of judgement) alone". He did in fact die alone in the middle of the desert alone as the prophet said he will. I think the story of this hadeeth was that during the battle of Tabook, and many muslims with weaker faith were staying behind because the trip was very hard. So one while they were going the sahaba look back and Abu Dharr wasn't there. His donkey became very tired and wouldn't move so eventually AbuDharr gave up and left it and followed the army on foot. He eventually reached the muslim camp along time later and then the prophet saw him and said "May Allah be merciful on AbuDharr, He will live alone, He will die alone and He will be raised (on the day of judgement) alone"
