View Full Version : Greek Muslims

Bin George

In Turkey, there are two main Greek speaking Muslim ethnic groups: One of them are the Muslim Greek refugees coming from Crete called Cretans. The other group lives near Black Sea, Pontus. The largest group speaking Pontic Greek lives in 5-6 villages in Tonya, Trabzon and in nearly 50 villages at the valley Yukarı Solaklı that is south of Of. And also there are at least two villages established by the emmigrants at Sakarya near Constantinople (Istanbul). The language they speak is a dialect of archaic Cappadocian Greek that is probably not spoken in Turkey now. They are Sunni Muslims, but it is claimed that some of the Pontus Greek Muslims are secret Christians.

There's no satisfactory research made on the Pontus Muslims. They speak Greek and carry on Greek (Roman) traditions but they refuse to be accepted in an ethnic group other than the Turks. They call themsevels Turkos and their language as Romaika. They consider the real Greeks as a seperate race and call them as O Romeos. Many researches agree on that they are converted to Islam at 1700s. The archaic dialect is still living and spoken fluently by the young generation. Most women can only speak the Pontus Greek. Their population is estimated between 200.000-300.000. But in near future, there's no hope for the language to survive, because of the television and high rate of immigration.

There's no population estimation about the Cretans but I guess their number as 500.000. They live in the villages near Aegean Sea, Mediterenean Sea and Marmara Sea. These villages had generally occupied by the Greeks living in Mikra Asia. After 1922, the Orthodox Greeks in Turkey and the Muslims in Greece were exchanged by the goverments. There are also many Cretan Greeks living in large seaside towns as Izmir(Smyrni), Antalya, Ayvalık. The old generation is still speaking Cretan Greek. Some of them, the old individuals are monolingual. But the young generation can speak only Turkish. The language will dissapear after a few generation.

These two Greek dialects have no chance to live in Mikra Asia for long. As the Greeks are considered to be enemies, speaking Greek language attracts no symphaty. The children are educated in Turkish and nearly every house has a television 24 hour broadcas ting Turkish.

Ahlan Habibi Bin George. InshaaAllaah you will have a beneficial and enjoyable stay here at AussieMuslims :)

So, of which of the two are you from? A Cretan or a Pontian/Pontusian? lol

Wherever you are from (if I am right, you are from neither), I will still love you as my Turkish wanna be Greek Muslim Brother in Islaam! :p

Actually Dad's family migrated from Pontus when Turkey deported most of its Christians and Greece deported most of their muslims. Mum's side are Aromanian Vlachs, these people can be found all over the Balkans. Has this gone over your head bro? I can give a short history lesson when I see you next insha'Allah

Efkharisto ya bin George. We have our own growing population of Greek Muslims here in Melbourne. I was actually just talking to a Greek guy just now about Islam, I think he's an international student here. May Allah guide him to the Truth of Islam.

Just regarding the name George - it's Yorgo in Greek is that correct?

Its spelt Γεώργιος (Yeōryos) and is pronounced as Yorghios/Yoryos usually. It comes from the word Γεωργός (Yeōrghòs) which means 'farmer'.

Wow! So it means "Farmer"? :subhan:!

The name "Yorgo" or Γεώργιος is the most famous amongst Turks.

I mean, if we were to be asked which Greek name do we know, I am sure that the overwhelming population would say "Yorgo".

When I was in Athens in Jamaat i came accross a large population of Greek "Arabs" apparently Greeks had migrated to Syria and lebanon, settled there and embraced Islam for centuries but retained their Greek identity...in recent times the Greek governement resettled them in Greece giving them the Greek citizenship...I had the pleasure of visiting many of them in Athens...I was told they populate a full suburb, they speak Arabic and Greek of course.

Assalaamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

I think the brother was refering to your display pic (I don't like the term avatar - as its meaning is not a good one).

That's Brother Malcolm X (Shaheed inshaAllah). He was a great orator who was killed in the 60's if I recall correctly. He was an activist and a leader (similar to Martin Luther King). He was associated with the Nation of Islam cult for a period. His name once he entered Islam became El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Allah Yarhamu.
