Cairo university students stage protest after mass food poisoning

By Mahmoud Fouly CAIRO (Xinhua) -- A wave of anger was triggered among students of Egypt’s Al-Azhar University Tuesday as 583 of their college classmates were poisoned after allegedly having rotten chicken during lunch in the students’ city restaurant a day before.

The way to the university’s dormitory in Cairo’s Nasr City was more like a dead-end, as protesting students overspread the surrounding streets, causing traffic jam while shouting slogans demanding dismissal of University President Osama al-A’bd, who already suspended the director of the University City and the university food service manager and referred them to the prosecution for interrogation.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s visit to a nearby hospital hosting 81 students also greatly added to the traffic jam in the area as police temporarily cordoned off some streets for security reasons.

Salah Sayed, an Al-Azhar University student coming from Daqhaliya governorate’s city of Mansoura, some 90 km north of the capital Cairo, told Xinhua that the quality of food service in the hostel of the university is generally quite low.

“I warned my roommate that the food did not look good but he was so hungry and ate it. An hour later, he used the bathroom many times then he fell on the floor and started screaming and finally he passed out,” he said, demanding trial of the university president and the doctor responsible for examining food.

Another student, Ahmed Reda, said that at the end of last month, “the students started to find warms and nails in the food,” adding that they informed the police in a formal report but they did not care.

The front and the floor of the nearby administration building of the university was smeared with slogans written in black paint spray, like “Down with the university president!” and “We demand trial of Al-Azhar officials!”

Pieces of glass were scattered on the floor of corridor and all office windows and doors were broken including the university president’s, as furious students broke into the building during their protests.

“Around thousands of students - maybe the whole students - broke into the administration building and broke the windows and the doors as you see,” Ezzat, a security guard at the building, told Xinhua.

Maher Youssef, the public relations manager who had to leave his office to avoid the enraged students, said the situation was “ very difficult,” expressing hope that the suspension and interrogation of the hostel’s director and food service manager would pacify the students.

“This case of course stirs up the public opinion which makes the students escalate their demands to dismiss the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, arguing the university is part of his domain,” Youssef told Xinhua.

After damaging the administration building, a few thousands of students marched to the main office of Al-Azhar Imam, broke into the external gate, but they were stopped by vehicles of central security police before breaking into the main premises.

As more marches joined the protesters, several ambulances and police vehicles were deployed outside the building.

“We demand a deterrent legal punishment for those responsible, including Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the university president, the dormitory director and the food service manager,” Ahmed Abdel- Fattah, a senior student, told Xinhua, noting the university’s subsidized food is usually unclean, whereas it’s very spendy for expatriates to eat outside.

An official report from the Ministry of Health said the 583 infected students were distributed among eight hospitals in Cairo.

“At least 450 students out of the 583 were discharged after treatment,” the ministry’s spokesman Yahya Moussa told Xinhua.

While resting in bed, Mohamed Shaker, a student under treatment in Abbasiya Fever Hospital told Xinhua that he felt stomachache and fever and started to throw up repeatedly after he had that lunch, noting he was getting better.

“Neither the university president nor any representative from Al-Azhar came to visit the sick students,” Marwan Alaa, deputy secretary-general of a students’ union at Al-Azhar complained, looking forward to a fair punishment for those responsible for the issue.

Sohair Mohamed Ali, a nurse in the ward, said that the patients will have a final blood test Wednesday evening and if it is negative, they would be discharged.

.
University president sacked over
mass food poisoning in Egypt

CAIRO (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Supreme Council of Al-Azhar decided Wednesday to sack the president of Al-Azhar University after some 580 students were infected with food poisoning, official MENA news agency reported.

After an emergency meeting chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the council decided to form a committee to set up rules for electing a new president for the university, stressing the elections would be held after the rules are approved by the council.

Also, the council decided to dismiss a number of the hostel’s leading officials and referring those responsible for the food poisoning incident to interrogation.

The council also announced new job vacancies at the hostel and assigned the hostel administration to contract with a cleaning company to improve the services provided to the students and to avoid similar future incidents.

Al-Azhar also reaffirmed “complete respect” for the students and their full right to express their demands peacefully, condemning some transgressions committed by students during their protests.

In response, the students, who staged protests outside Al-Azhar headquarters, expressed their happiness with the decision of dismissing the university president Osama el-Abd, chanting slogans of victory over the strong decisions taken by Al-Azhar officials.

On Monday afternoon, the students of Al-Azhar had lunch containing allegedly “rotten chicken” that led to mass poisoning of at least 583 students according to the latest Health Ministry’s report.

The majority of the students were treated and discharged from hospitals.

President Mohamed Morsi visited a number of students in a hospital in Cairo Tuesday and ordered to provide them with immediate and proper medical care.
