Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah said that: "This dunya (world) is like a shadow. If you try to catch it, you will never be able to do so. If you turn your back towards it, it has no choice but to follow you".

^That reminds me of a bayt shi`r in Arabic. It goes something like:
ليس العيدُ لِمن لَبِسَ الجديدُ
لاكنَّ العيدُ لِمن إيمانهُ يزيدُ
Translation: It's not Eid for the one who wears the new clothes. Rather it is Eid for the one who's Iman increases (or has increased).
All the above quotes are very good and I heard them before, but this one here is new to me and man it's great. It's very true, if you do not act upon knowledge, or even worse, commit sins, you will forget stuff. You'll forget the evidences for rulings, and forget things you've learned in halqahs. Worst of all, you will forget Qur'aan you've memorized. You go back to review, you will find many mistakes, or even a difficulty reading that you must overcome before it's all nice and smooth again.
أحب الصالحين ولست منهم وأرجو أن أنال بهم شفاعة
وأكره من تجارته المعاصي وإن كنا سواء في البضاعة

Whoever remembers death often will find a small amount (of worldly things) sufficient for him; and whoever includes his speech in his deeds will speak little.

"The servant is always in the blessing of Allah, which necessitates thankfulness, and in sinfulness, which requires seeking forgiveness. Both of these matters are required and essential for the servant at all times, as the servant does not cease to alternate between Allah's (various) favours and blessings, and does not cease to be in need of repentance and seeking forgiveness." Ibn Taymiyyah

The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said: “To smile in the company of your brother is charity. To command to do good deeds and to prevent others from doing evil is charity. A man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim).

every case is to transmit the greatest amount of information, with the
greatest clarity, in the minimum number of words.” Wolski (2006)O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allâh as just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (Al-Mā'idah: 8)
