It should be noted that the One Who is testing him is the Most Wise and the Most Merciful, and that He – may He be glorified – did not send this calamity in order to destroy him or cause him pain or finish him off, rather He is checking on him, testing his patience, acceptance and faith; it is so that He may hear his du’aa’ and supplication, so that He may see him standing before Him, seeking protection, filled with humility and complaining to Him.

It should be noted that what comes after being patient and seeking reward is pleasure and joy that is many times greater than what he could have got from keeping what he lost. Sufficient for him is the “house of praise” that will be built for him in Paradise as a reward for his praising his Lord and turning to Him (by saying Inna Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji’oon (Verily to Allah we belong and unto Him is our return)). So let him decide which of the two calamities is greater: a calamity in this world, or the calamity of missing out on the house of praise in eternal Paradise. In al-Tirmidhi it is narrated in a marfoo’ report: “On the Day of Resurrection people will wish that their skins had been cut with scissors in this world, when they see the reward of those who were struck with calamity.” One of the salaf said: Were it not for the calamities of this world, we would come empty-handed on the Day of Resurrection.

The following is an excerpt from an article writen by Robert Fisk for the independent
My favourite line of the week came from the "security source" - just how one becomes a "security source" remains a mystery to me -- who announced: "Terrorists are always looking for new ways to strike terror... There is no end of the possibilities where terrorists can try to cause terror to the public." Well, you could have fooled me.Sahih Muslim Book 41, Number 6954:Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come before a person of Qahtan comes forth driving people with his stick.

The superiority of the learned man over a (mere) worshipper is like the superiority of the moon at night when it is full over all other stars.
Abu Hurayra also reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Renew your faith." "How can we renew our faith?" they asked. The Prophet replied: "Say always: la ilaha illallah." (Narrated by Ahmad with a fair chain of authorities)

Do not try to run away from trials and tribulations, but endure them with patience. They cannot be avioded, and there is nothing for it but to endure them with patience, How can you expect the whole of this world, and all that has been created therein, to undergo change and transformation just to suit your convenience? The Prophets are the best of all creatures, yet they have always had to suffer afflication and so it is for their followers, those who tread in their footsteps as they walk along their highway, emulating their example.

Practice what you have learned, for theory without practice is like a spirit without a body. One who is content with learning alone is not learned, for the truly learned seek more than words. [Al Hujwiri]

Some popular proverbs of Bangladesh that I like:

Chokh moner ayna: Eyes are the mirror of mind.
Nai mama theke kana mama bhalo: A one-eyed uncle is better than no uncle at all. Equivalent to the English saying, "Be grateful of what you have as it is better than having nothing at all"

Allah has decreed that, in this life, hardships and disasters strike both believers and non-believers. For a non-believer, they are inconveniences that hinder him from proceeding with his normal involvement in the worldly life. For a believer, on the other hand, they are instances of rest and remembrance, tests that promise great rewards, and indications of atonement and expiation of sins. Regardless of how little is the harm that strikes a believer, it carries with it good news of forgiveness and elevated rank (in Jannah). The Righteous Predecessors used to be pleased when a hardship afflicted them, seeing it as a token of Allah's forgiveness and benevolence.

Abu Dardaa` was in Damascus, the capital of the Islamic Calipha at the time and he saw the extravagance of the Muslim Ummah. The Muslims were so wealthy at that time and the lifestyle of the Muslims was changing. Abu Dardaa' was on the strict way of the Sunnah.
So he stood up in Damascus and said -
"Oh people of Damascus, Oh people of Damascus,
Don't you have any shame?
You are gathering wealth that you will not use,
And you are building palaces that you will not live in,
And you are expecting to live longer than your life.
And the people before you,
They used to gather and use what they gathered,
They used build and they used to build better than you,
And they used to live longer than your lives.
But than, whatever they gathered did not do them any good,
And their palaces became their graveyards,
And their desires were false.
And remember, that the people `Aad had an army that extends from `Aaddan upto `Umaan.
Who will buy from me the inheritance of `Aad with 2 dirhims?""...The eyes are filled with tears and the heart is full of grief but we do not say anything except that which is pleasing to our lord.."

"I looked at all the friends and did not find a better friend than safeguarding the tongue. I thought about all the dresses but did not find a better dress than piety. I thought about all sorts of wealth but did not find a better wealth than contentment in a little. I thought of all sorts of good deeds but did not find a better deed than offering good advice. I looked at all types of sustenance but did not find a better sustenance than patience". 'Umar (radhiAllaahu 'anhu)

I went to Brother Belal's lecture today and he mentioned something about patience that Umar Ibn Khattab -Radhy'Allaahu ta'aala anhum- said. It was nice! But, SubhaanaAllaah i just can't remember it.

Would this be it? If not, it's still a nice quote mashaa'Allaah
Umar (radiAllaahu 3anhu) said: "The best days of our lives were ours by virtue of patience."What is for you will not pass you and what passes you is not for you!
