From the first of Ta'leef Collective's Thought Leadership Lecture Series with Dr. Umar Faruq Abdullah on the topic

    * "Culture gives you a sense of self and the ability to negotiate reality."

    * "Globalism seeks to wipe out culture, and the death of culture is one of the most dangerous things we face today. You cannot be a human being without a sound culture."

    * "Islam is not culturally predatory. If Islam would have come to the Native Americans the Muslims would have worn feathers."

this is random but at Sportsgirl they were (maybe still are) selling Native American style necklaces with feathers and the like. They're so cool! but I thought maybe it's associated with some pagan tribal belief so I didn't get it (also not worth the price - mum said I could make a feather necklace at home lol).

Symbol meaning of feathers deal with ascension and spiritual evolution to a higher plane. Feathers were worn by Native American Chiefs to symbolize their communication with Spirit, and to express their celestial wisdom. Also in the Native American Indian culture, feathers represented the power of the thunder gods, along with the power of air and wind.

Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

I take into account any little good deed and I forgive even major sins. My Mercy supersedes My Anger; My Tolerance supersedes My Blame; My Forgiveness supersedes My Punishment as I am more merciful with My slaves than a mother with her child.

This one particular line struck out more than the others...

If he does not repent, I still treat him by putting them in hardship to purify him.

In this life of poverty, hardship and trials, Abdullah asked his father [Imam Ahmad] one day, “Abi when will we ever relax?” His father, one of the greatest revivers of the Sunnah, a role model for all Muslims, looked him in the eye and said, “With the first step we take into Jannah.”

The use of the word 'just' by an Australian means that whatever it is you have to do, it will not be easy, as in 'Just pull that sword out of the stone' or 'Just split that atom'.

The evidence for that is that a man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah, if I am killed for the sake of Allaah, and bear that with patience, seeking the reward of Allaah, will that expiate for my sins? He said: “Yes, except for debt. Jibreel told me that.” Narrated by Muslim.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allaah from debt, and he used to say: “O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from sin and debt.” Someone said to him: How often you seek refuge from debt, O Messenger of Allaah. He said: “When a man incurs debt, when he speaks he lies and when he makes a promise he breaks it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2397) and Muslim (589).

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stated that the shaheed (martyr) would be forgiven for everything except debt. Narrated by Muslim. This is indicative of the seriousness of debt.
