This isn't really a 'highlight', but it has a positive ending so i guess i'll put it here.

Yesterday i left iisna about 2pm and headed home. It only takes me 5mins. As i pulled into Mutton Rd, Fawkner, i saw a grass fire in one of the resident's front yard. I stopped for a min, hoping it might die down but it didn't. It was quite windy during that part of the day so the fire kept burning.

Two women ran frantically out of the house. One middle aged woman with a child in her arms i think and another elderly lady, perhaps her mother or mother in law. One of them had a bucket in her hands so i think she wanted to put the flames out but realised there were too many. I half asked/told her i'd call 000 but she started mumbling a number .. 9354 or something or other. She didn't seem to understand english and i wasn't going to call anyone other than the brigade. Who knew where this person she wanted me to call lived, how far away or even if they were home. By the time they were to get to the house it may already be on fire. Allahu A3lam.

I called 000, my first emergency call. I was asked if i wanted fire/ambulance/police, and ofcourse i said fire. The operator told me to hold the line and he would put me through. The flames were low yet spreading at this stage. As the phone was ringing and i was being put through, i could tell the operator was trained to keep me calm. Mind you i was very calm, but every few moments as i was being connected to the fire department, he would calmly say words such as, 'Stay on the line, we will put you through,' or 'Stay on the line you will get through,' etc, to which i'd just say, 'Ok,' and appreciate the way he was doing his job.

Finally i was through and i told the lady the situation and gave her the address. She asked me if the flames were heading toward the house, and as i was observing them to give her an answer, she repeated the question. There seemed to be some panic in her voice which made me panic and a bit nervous. As i said it was windy, so i told her the wind was pushing the flames away from the house and toward the front fence, but it was heading toward the neighbour's side where there were a few large trees along the fire's path. The flames also increased as some plants along the front fence were large and caught on fire. There was also a ute parked in the neighbour's driveway which i was worried might catch on fire also.

By this stage some people gathered and i heard one of the onlookers say that a power line had fallen and caused the fire. He seemed to be right, as the power line was in the middle of the patch where the fire seemed to have started.

It was Friday, just after 2pm and some brothers were returning from Salat al-Jumu'ah at the Fawkner masjid. Many of them come down Mutton Rd, and that included the residents of the house next door to where the fire had started and seemed to be heading. About 10 or so brothers quickly gathered and started to put the fire out alhumdulillah.

I called 000 again and told them the brigade may no longer be needed, but the lady told me they would still arrive. Atleast 2 trucks arrived and i don't know what happened after that because i had already left. Alhumdulillah, no one seems to have been injured.

SubhaanAllaah! May Allaah protect us from such things, or allow us to respond in the best of manners if such a thing were to occur around us, aameen.

Ukhtee UnsurAlUmmah, if you do not mind me asking, what stopped you, or any one else from actually helping to fight the fire (before the Brothers came and fought it that is)?

Why was it only the Brothers (according to your explanation) that fought it?

Khayr inshaaAllaah... Maybe it was better that the Brothers fought the fire. That way the community would see that we are not out there to destroy, rather to protect for the sake of Allaah.

Even if the one/s being protected is/are non-Muslim/s.

    What a last sentence! LoL

you need a proper steamer for this, preferably from asian shop they have special ones for dumplings

UZBAKISTAN STYLE DUMPLINGS RECIPIE, She didnt have an exact recipie but i watched her make it and asked her the entire time how many did she put of this and that and this is kind of what i recorded.

    FOR DOugh:

About 6 cups of plain flour
2 cups of self raising flour
    1 pack yeast
    1/3 cup olive oil/vegie oil

stuffing mix all these together once prepared , drain any exess moisture:
a big quarter of cabbage chopped small (like you would chop herbs )
1/2 kilo lean/soft lamb pieces (chopped into tiny pieces, smaller than kavurma)
2 small onions or 1 large onion
good amount of salt and some pepper

    procedure:
add all flour yeast into large wooden or plastic bowl
start adding water slowly and mixing with hands until flour reaches the right consistancy (similar to making bread)
    add oil slowly and mix
now you have to rap the bowl in a quilt or thick blanket and leave for a good 1 1/2 hour

when you check the dough it shoud be kind of holy , lots of holes in it

you get the dough and start taking a hand full at a time and setting it aside, you brush it with a bit of oil (have oil in little plate, to moisten the dough) so little balls aside (larger than golf balls but smaller than tennis balls )

you start getting one at a time and stuffing them (for this step you need to download some youtube clip how to stuff dumplings, its abit tricky but you cand do a simple one where you put the mixture in the middle and close the top like they make pasties)

they need a good half hour in the steamer

    "smaller than kavurma"

    Serious?

Kavurma is pretty small Ukhtee... How I dice the meat at least it is... Any smaller than that, and it would probably turn to mince, w'Allaahu a`lam...

I kept thinking in my mind i should go down and get the bucket from the lady and try to put the fire out, but as i mentioned it was very windy (ask my brother, he walked home in the wind) and i would be putting myself in danger. Also i was wearing loose and flammable clothing and if that caught on fire Allahu A3lam what would have happened. The main issue was the wind and the uncertainty of what would have happened if i got out of the car. There were other onlookers before the brothers came and no one dared go near the flames.

Sorry Ukhtee, I was not targeting you. Rather, it was sincere curiosity.

I understand your circumstance, and that you had done what you could... I just wondered why no one from the crowd of onlookers did not do anything, and only the Brothers that came past did?

Khayr, not a big issue... As I said, maybe it was a Rahmah minAllaah to soften the people's hearts towards Muslims, and thus Islaam, w'Allaahu A`lam.

Alhamdulillah I am very happy today because my granddaughter has been placed in my care. Previously she was being brought up in a non-muslim home, then was placed into foster care because of drug and alcohol abuse by the mother, and now the courts have granted me temporary custody and my son visitation rights. If the mother does not accept the help from the courts, the custody could become permanent. She is only 4 months old. May Allah (swt) grant me the ability and patience to give her the best environment and guidance. May this child also be the thing that wakes my son up to the truth and inspires him to accept Islam into his life.

I had a non-Muslim friend ask me if she could sit back and watch on as I prayed duhr today.. she was really interested.. so I said sure no problems. She's been asking me many questions lately.. and she'll continue to ask I'm sure. She's a very curious person.. may this curiosity be that which brings her to Islaam.
