The Message Gets A Modern Remake

A controversial 1970s biopic of the prophet Muhammad is to receive a big-screen makeover - The Message is to be remade for modern film fans.

The English-language movie provoked outrage among Muslims prior to its release when it was rumoured that actor Anthony Quinn would portray the religious leader.

Depictions of the prophet are unheard of in Islam because of fears it will lead to idolatry, which is forbidden in the religion.

The claims that Quinn had been cast as Muhammad sparked riots in the U.S. in 1977, resulting in the death of two people. Quinn did not play Muhammad - instead director Moustapha Akkad signified the prophet's presence in scenes with light organ music.

Now the film's producer, Oscar Zoghbi, has revealed plans to revamp the 1976 movie and give it a modern twist.

He is looking to shoot the remake, titled The Messenger of Peace, in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia.

But Zoghbi insists he is not trying to cause offence with the film.

He says, "We have only the utmost respect for (the original film) but technology in cinema has advanced since the 1970s. This latest project will employ modern film techniques in its renewal of the first film's core messages."

I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, 'The Bus That couldn't Slow Down.'

Case 39 is kinda similar, wherein it is centred around a 'troubled' girl.

I watched it a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. And would advise it to anyone that likes suspense type movies.

    Lead actors:
    Renée Zellweger and Jodelle Ferland.

IMDb has this user review which I thought would suffice nicely, because I couldn't be stuffed writing one up :
This is a movie we have seen before just written in different ways. A girl is suspected of being abused and the case worker takes a very personal interest in her. When the parents are removed from the situation, the girl begs for the love of the social worker, which she gets. Renee Zellweger does a decent job in this movie. I would not call it a horror movie. It is suspenseful, but nothing I thought was overly horrific. The little girl does a brilliant job playing the victim. Predictable, the social worker takes this child into her home pending placement elsewhere and finds that this little girl is not quite what she seems. She seeks out different methods to deal with the problem, but it ultimately ends up just like I thought it would. Not the worst movie ever made.
    I rated it 5/10.

(I have a funny way of rating movies... Anything below 3 is really shoddy.)

    Book of Eli.

Denzel Washington plays Eli, a man with a mission.

This movie picked up really slow, but when the action scenes came into it, I was riveted.

Eli living in post-apocalyptic USA, has a mission. After finding a bible from amongst the rubble, he claims he's heard a voice tell him to take this 'book' West. For thirty years ever since, he has been trekking the roads to the West.

This bible is the only copy available on the face of the earth, as it was mandatory to burn all copies of this book by previous governments.

Along his journey to the West, Eli comes across scavengers strewn across the face of the barren wastelands. Finally he ends up in a town somewhat half decent.

The person running the town is a ruffian, self proclaimed leader, looking for just such a book that he can use to get his own ends with the people. When he realises Eli has such a book, he tries everything in his power to get it off him.

Eli is on a mission that he believes in, and will stop at no measure to make sure that he does what this voice is telling him.

We all know that Eli will make it to the West, but how, and in what state?

My personal rating for the movie... 3.5/10

Watchable, but not worth going to the movies for.

IMDb had this in its review:
Eli (Denzel Washington) has been on a journey for 30 years, walking west across America after a cataclysmic war that turned the earth into a total wasteland. The world has become a lawless civilization where people must kill or be killed. The barren roads belong to gangs of cutthroats who rob and kill for water, a pair of shoes, a lighter, or just for fun. Eli is a peaceful man who only acts in self defense, and becomes a warrior with unbelievable killing skills when he is challenged. After the war and the "Big Flash", Eli was guided by a higher power to a hidden book and given the task of protecting the book and taking it to its final destination. Eli guards the book with his life, because he knows that the book is the only hope that humanity has for its future.

Nay, the title of the thread says it all...

    Movies REVIEWS

    I'm a harsh critic

My scoring system goes somewhat like this:

1/10 - Dismal, enough to make one contemplate suicide, na`oodhubi'L-Laah
2/10 - Why did they even think of making this movie?
3/10 - Meh, viewable. If not watched, nothing lost, nothing gained.
    4/10 - Good, entertaining.
    5/10 - Nice, enjoyable.

Now, this is where things get tricky. Anything above 5 is in reality like a decimal point system. So, 6/10 would be 5.1 and 7/10 would be 5.2 and so on so forth, to a maximum of 10 (= 5.5).

One movie that I have rated 10/10 that I can recall would be Sixth Sense.

Whilst it would have possibly rated above a five for the whole movie, when I saw the 'punch line', I was absolutely blown away. Emphasis on the words "punch line".

Funny that I only ever watched it once, despite liking it so much.

Also, of that genre, I have watched The Game, with Michael Douglas. However, I think if I can recall correctly, it had a few un-Islaamic scenes in it. I would probably give that movie a 7.5/10.

And finally, there was a movie with Ice-T in it called "Surviving the Game". Fantastic movie also.

These are just a few of the movies I thoroughly enjoyed when I first watched them.

I may write a review for each of them later on inshaaAllaah.

Watch Slumdog Millionaire. It's really good, I loved it. It is seriously one of the best modern movies I have seen in a very long time.

I started writing a review but I'm terrible at doing that and I was giving away too much of the movie. I don't want to wreck it so just watch it for yourself. Believe me it's not just another overrated trash film, this one is really interesting and original.

Slum Dog Millionaire is an AWESOME movie!

I would easily rate that movie 9/10.

The only reason I am not giving it a full 10/10 is due to the soppy romance in it. (Why do I envision the Sisters now ruching to their local video stores for a copy? )

I heavily recommend it to any movie buff.

Here is a review from IMDb:

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" (2000) (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?) But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

    Absolutely excellent movie!

Also, I found rather ironically, as opposed to many Bollywood movies, I do not recall that this movie had that much music in it either.

I definitely advise anyone willing to watch a good movie to grab a copy and watch it!

I have to agree it was a great movie. A sister lent it to me some time ago and said 'its got no music its great' etc. But I have to inform you all that it has background music all the way through it. Many people don't notice these things, and only count music as something with singing or dancing. Often the background sounds are actually a full orchestra, so just keep that in mind insha'Allah

As a budding graphic designer, I agree with you Ukhtee.

Before I ventured the path of graphics, I rarely noticed graphics being such an enveloping thing!

Now, I stop to inspect how posters, or animations, or any mundane graphics could have been designed. It seems it is everywhere!

So, I guess, you having had a musical past, would detect it much more so than the 'layman' who doesn't/hasn't really delved into that kind of stuff would.

Again, I agree that we grow deaf, dumb and/or blind in places that our senses have been brazenly exposed to, causing us to be blasé to such things now, unless we have been taught to look out for such things

I remember when Ukhtunaa aussiemu stated in another post of hers where she saw it strange when she moved from one state/city to another that the women there were not covered up as where she had come from... despite it being acceptable wear Islaamically.

Ghafara'L-Laahu lanaa wa lakum for our shortcomings, aameen.

And may He, Subhaanah, allow us to be more vigilant in protecting ourselves from harm/haraam, aameen.

Theres been no objection from the mods thus far, and you are lucky no other member has jumped down your throat either about this issue lol; usually I cop it from other members about movies etc. This time I get to take a break I'm looking forward to reviewing the following this year:

    Iron Man 2 - April 29
    Robin Hood - May 13
    The A-Team - June 10
The Green Hornet - December 26

I'm disappointed theyre going to do a remake of the Karate Kid. It shouldn't be allowed! The original was a classic.

I LOVE that old long movie/mini-series "Roots" about the African slaves that were sent to America. The protagonist Kunta Kinte is from a Muslim background of the Mandinka tribe in Africa. He's a legend! (his daughter Kizzy and grandson 'Chicken jawj' are also legends)

A saga of African-American life, based on Alex Haley's family history. Kunta Kinte is abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to America. He makes several escape attempts until he is finally caught and maimed. He marries Bell, his plantation's cook, and they have a daughter, Kizzy, who is eventually sold away from them. Kizzy has a son by her new master, and the boy grows up to become Chicken George, a legendary cock fighter who leads his family into freedom. Throughout the series, the family observes notable events in U.S. history, such as the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, slave uprisings, and emancipation.
