Die Hard 4.0 - no words.
Whoever remembers death often will find a small amount (of worldly things) sufficient for him; and whoever includes his speech in his deeds will speak little.

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. (Surat al Isra': 27)

Watched "Incendies" last night, its a foreign film in french, arabic and english so if your not a fan of reading subtitles perhaps its not for you...
Anyway it was an extraordinary film which I highly recommend...its also fairly clean apart from the violence and awrah.
anyway heres the link to the trailer:

A little belated but your review of a movie is 'no words' alongside the name of the movie... That has got to rank amongst the worst reviews I've ever heard. I'm not going to say worst review, because I've heard worse...

Saw 'The Town' tonight, quite enjoyed it. I love the films that have Ben Affleck and are set in Boston (Good Will Hunting is another that I saw recently). Its a film about bank robbers in Boston, has Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner, great directing, wouldn't make my top 20 but was a good watch.

Eughhhhh so I generally don't like action movies. They're all the same jibberish to me, similar stupid story lines etc etc annoying. Die Hard was on TV that night and my brother was watching it, I tuned in a bit and found it kinda engaging. Maybe because I like Bruce Willis as an actor...anyway, I really enjoyed the movie - the action scenes, the story line, Bruce Willis' character's dry humour, all of it. And except for the swearing it was a clean movie.
One scene that stuck in my memory was when this helicopter was chasing Willis and the geeky hacker kid and they drive into this tunnel then Willis, to get rid of the chopper, gets into this cop car and drives really fast towards the exit that the chopper is hovering near and just as the car approaches the exit of the tunnel, Willis jumps out and the car drives up this wall thing and drives right into the chopper bringing it to the ground.
Epic scene. It's on youtube somewhere, too.

I love watching movies too, even though I no longer watch them, but I often feel very tempted to. Its a great way to relax and to 'escape'. But then I remember what one of my teachers told me one day first referring to the ayat:

    Surah Al-Noor V30-31

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. (30) And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) ........... (31)

How can we watch a movie, even if it's clean (G rated) and stare a someone of the opposite sex? Enjoying their acting skills? What if there is a married couple, and we're enjoying watching two people acting who are not related to each other, the woman is not covered.....we're enjoying this haram. Will we not be called to account? On the Day that is 50,000 years long? And every good and every evil, even if it is tiny, we will be called to account for?

I know it's not easy to give up.....but it is true that when we give up something for the sake of Allah (swt) He gives us something better. May Allah (swt) help us, and strengthen us to work hard for our Akhira, and not get caught by enjoying the things that are the tricks of shaytan to corrupt us and take us away from the rememberance of Allah.

What is the ruling on watching videos in general, and the movies that are called documentaries? Please advise us, may Allaah bless you.

    Praise be to Allaah.

Watching movies includes looking at things that are haraam, such as seeing ‘awrahs, following immoral actions, or listening to things that are haraam such as music and obscene talk. Undoubtedly it is haraam to watch them in this case.

If the movies are free of such things, then there is nothing wrong with watching them, so long as that does not distract one from remembering Allaah or keep one from doing something that is obligatory.

No distinction is made between documentaries and other kinds of movies.

Watching movies has a bad effect on the individual and on the ummah. These include the following:

    1- Provocation of desires

2- Propagation of immorality which is made attractive and easily accessible

3- Teaching and justification of crime, and making it familiar to young and old

4- Corruption of married life, by making the wife seem ugly to the husband and vice versa, by showing images of attractive girls and men

5- Spreading corrupt beliefs which are based on kaafir theories, such as the theory of evolution, or attributing the powers of creation and destruction to researchers and inventors, or propagating magic, soothsaying and claims to know the unseen, or making fun of religion and religious people, and other things which appear in movies that are shown to young and old.

6- Wasting time and draining away energy, living with illusions far removed from reality.

And there are other evil consequences.

Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (may Allaah preserve him) said: Another of the evils of looking at those beguiling images and enjoying watching them is those images which are shown in movies on videos and on the TV etc, which show images of adorned women, especially those which are broadcast from foreign countries, and those that are shown via satellite, etc.

They are a fitnah (trial, temptation), and what a fitnah. The one who looks at those images cannot be sure that he will remain uninfluenced by the image of this woman or this zaani (adulterer) or this one who is committing evil and showing him the way to do it. He may not be able to control himself and stop himself from looking for ways to fulfil his desire, if he does not have the faith to stop him looking at these images, whether they are drawings, photographs in the pages of newspapers and magazines, or they are shown in direct broadcasts or in movies and the like.

These sins and haraam things are prevalent everywhere, and they are calling people to commit immoral actions. When a woman watches these non-mahram men, she cannot be sure that her heart will not incline towards committing immoral deeds, and when a woman sees these immoral, adorned women she would be temped to imitate them because she will think that they are smarter and stronger than her. That will make her cast aside the garment of modesty and uncover her face, and she will show her beauty to strangers, and she will become a fitnah and what a fitnah. End quote from the website of Shaykh Ibn Jibreen.

For more information on the dangers of TV, see the essay al-Ijhaaz ‘ala al-Tilfaaz by Shaykh Muhammad Ahmad Ismaa’eel.

See also questions no. 3633, 3324, 1107, 13003 for the rulings on watching TV and movies.

    And Allaah knows best.

When Allah tests you, it is never intended to destroy you.
When He removes something in your possession,
it is only in order to empty your hands for an even greater gift."

What the...? A lot of those dwarves (as per the Tolkien spelling) look very un-dwarf-like... Especially poor old Thorin.

I know son! But the release is a year away! plenty time to start picking at its faults. Let us simple village folks be merry and gay for a short while

OK, three AWESOME movies I have recently watched. If you have not watched or at the very least heard of them before, then you were living under a rock like me:

    It's a Wonderful Life

    The Nightmare before Christmas

and the very adorable: ' My neighbour Totoro' this movie has made it to the top of my anime list. It is one of those movies you watch with a goofy smile on your face all the way through. I esp loved the younger sister and the way she followed the older one around and copied every thing she did (reminds me of a particularly annoying forum member). I recommend the fox version and not the disney one
