Was thinking if anyone had any cool science experiments one can do at home with the kids? This is one I came across today.. was looking for more ideas..

Whoever remembers death often will find a small amount (of worldly things) sufficient for him; and whoever includes his speech in his deeds will speak little.

It would be good if you explain the principles behind the science experiments.
Once upon a time when I was doing live science experiments on tv, I would explain the theory behind the experiment then demonstrate. I can't remember which experiments I did though.

she said "Once upon a time", which means it's a fairy tale.
Here is another cool site that has cool home-made science toys, might try some myself inshaAllah when I'm bored enough

Show and tell to the sisters please! Or me at least hehe (and yes, the plan was to explain the science behind it all).

How about an exciting Social Science experiment
It'll help bring out the Marxist inside the little kids, or if they are more socially conservative then the Talcott Parsons or Max Weber inside of them!
You could draw inspiration from the social science experiment in Trading Places

When I was doing my PhD, I visited schools as a rep for my institute and did DNA extractions for the kiddies within minutes. Kids were impressed when they saw the strands of DNA precipitate before their very eyes (we used salmon sperm DNA). Unfortunately, I don't have a supply of the solutions at home for personal use.

Grow mold .. check out this website http://www.thinkingfountain.org/ you can find other interesting stuff on there.

Kids microscopes are cheap these days.
A pair of binoculars can provide hours of joy. Just watch out taking kids to the beach with them...
Aunty, what are those two people doing?
I don't know let me see.

This is really cool, but messy. Also printer ink/toner shouldn't be consumed or inhaled, so if you're going to try this with kids, you need to be careful. Doesn't get much cooler though. Look at some of the art in the related vids... ridiculous.

grow plants, go to the gardening thread.
start a worm farm.
make a big compost heap (%70 carbon %30 nitrogen) and throw a dead animal inside, open after a few weeks to see it has miraculously disappeared.

I can't remember exactly how to do it.
But the best part of using Bunsen Burners at school was when you'd hold your fingers over the airholes, then suddenly let go and make the red flame into a fireball looking thing above the blue one for a split second.
I miss school.
Never thought I'd say that, but it certainly beats the real world.

compost done properly does not stink, even composted human excrement, if managed correctly will not stink, its all about the ratio of carbon to nitrogen and aeration.
i stayed at a farm once where they had composting toilets that didn't stink under normal circumstance, they also had a shower which the hot water was made from a pipe wound through a compost pile, we also made a compost pile and put a dead calf in it, the only time it stank was when we turned it over after a couple of days, even at that point the calf was substantially decomposed, and the smell was from the fact that it was too wet, ie it went anaerobic.

I'd try it but we don't have a proper garden anymore. Most of the plants are in pots. We have a small vege patch and a rose garden at the back. There's no room to make a compost heap.
Speaking of plants (thread high jack). I brought a jasmine arabica to cover a trellis. On the card it said that it's a climber but it's growing straight and it's not growing around the trellis. Not sure what to do about it. Doesn't look like it's going to vine around the trellis.
