That's one area Aus can really use some help with.

Laws protect criminals and punish the victims.

This is why I like the laws here in Texas. Not only do you have a right to bear arms to protect yourself, family and property, but you can use them in the case of home invasion, threat or any type of perceived harm:

Deadly Force in Defense of Person

"A person is justified in using deadly force against another if he would be justified in using force under Section 9.31 of the statute when and to the degree he reasonable believes that deadly force is immediately necessary to protect himself against the other's use or attempted use of unlawful deadly force, if a reasonable person in the same situation would have not retreated. The use of deadly force is also justified to prevent the other's imminent commission of aggravated kidnapping, murder, rape or robbery."

    Defense of Another Person

"A person is justified in using deadly force against an attacker to protect another person if he would be justified to use it to protect himself against an unlawful attack and he reasonably believes his intervention is immediately necessary to protect the other person from serious injury or death."

    Deadly Force to Protect Property

"A person is justified in using deadly force against another to protect his property to the degree he reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to prevent the other's imminent commission of arson, burglary, robbery, theft during the nighttime or criminal mischief during the nighttime, and he reasonably believes that the property cannot be protected by any other means."

"A person is justified in using deadly force against another to pervent the other who is fleeing after committing burglary, robbery, or theft during the nighttime, from escaping with the property and he reasonable believes that the property cannot be recovered by any other means; or, the use of force other than deadly force to protect or recover the property would expose him or another to a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury. (Nighttime is defined as the period 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise.)"

Your not serious are you Sammertx?
That's why there is so many maniacs going on massacres in america.
Any idiot can buy a gun & do what they want.
Unlike America it's very hard to get a gun here & it's not common for people to carry guns here.
Yes, you can buy illegal guns just like everywhere else in the world, but they start at $3,000 so not anyone can buy one.
There will always be shootings as long as there is guns, but as far as people going on rampages & doing mass killings or even things you call in America drive byes, it just doesn't happen here like America because your guns laws are so twisted.
Just a quick google search shows in the year 2000 there where over 50,000 deliberate & over 20,000 accidental gun shooting in America, in 2007 there where over 5,000 criminals or so called criminals shot dead by police!
In Australia statistics show we have under 100 gun accidents per year..

And you say Australia needs help with our gun laws?
You live in a country where people walk around with guns like normal, people shooting people everyday like it's nothing, cops shooting & killing over 5,000 people a year & you say we need help!
Sorry to say Sammertx but this is the typical arrogant attitude that makes me dislike amercians so much, while you are drowning and can't swim you still want to give swimming lessons

Fatima, move down to my area lol. Alhumdulilah no entertainment of that kind. Although I loved living in Lalor, love hearing the bustle of traffic everyday cause I lived in between 2 major roads, its too quiet down here, but at least I get to hear construction noise!

    Australia 20 millions...

    america 300 million....

plus the gun culture, they love their guns there. In yemen even in some parts of east africa, traditionally they walk around with a knife.. america, a more developed country, they walk around with guns.

the pen is mightier than the sword ... because it is lighter and can be concealed more easily, even though you don't need to conceal it, because it's legal, pen ftw

Just look at the statistics caller.
I legally own guns & store them in my home, if someone did break in I would use them to defend my family.
But, I have a brain in my head, I don't carry one around everywhere I go & our gun laws make it so hard for us to get the guns we make sure to do the right thing to keep them.
In America you can own assault rifles, auto/semi auto weapons, handguns etc.. what civilian needs to have an ak47 for self defence?
It's just stupid and that's why so many Americans die each year from guns...

    20 million x 15 = 300 million.
100 gun accidents for our population x 15 = 1,500 gun accidents for the same population as USA.
1,500 is far far far away from the 75,000 plus accidents in USA.

Everyone loves guns, but you don't just have every idiot walking around with one!

Aren't there a lot of laws about storing guns/ammunitions? I'm wondering if it really would be that easy to defend yourself and get to your guns if somene di break in.

There are strict requirements for storing licensed firearms and ammunition in your house (authorities do random checks) and like you said, how practical would it be to remove the weapon from storage and load it. Even then, what can you do with it? You will probably be charged with attempted murder.
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allâh as just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (Al-Mā'idah: 8)

Very true, but you can keep a loaded magazine in one compartment of gun safe & main door is unlocked by passcode.
So in about 10 seconds I would have a loaded gun in my hand.
But alot can & would happen in 10 seconds..

Our gun laws really protect us!

    Yes, I am serious.

The fact you have a right to defend your family, property and self in case of an intruder - in fact even if they are running from the scene, you can use deadly force to stop them. In Aus, what are you going to do - call the cops while the intruders slap you around in front of your family? Then if you kill them, you go on trial.

    It's a joke of a system.

Not just talking about gun laws either. I notice the huge disrespect cops are given in Aus compared to here. People talk back to them all the time and even verbally abuse them. Here, you cannot even get out of your vehicle if you're not given permission. Both hands on the steering wheel, no sudden movements.

    There's a death penalty.

There's entire areas in Texas where it's "dry" meaning alcohol cannot be sold or consumed.

Not even close to being a perfect system but certainly better in terms of giving it's citizens the right to defend themselves.

And the reason why there are so many maniacs here going on shooting sprees is because of the moral decay within American society. Look at Switzerland. They have a private citizens army (every citizen owns a gun) yet their firearm incidents are minuscule in comparison.

You are missing my point! We don't need guns to defend ourselves because we don't have maniacs running around with guns breaking into houses!
Our cops don't need to be uptight & stressing about who is going to try & shoot them next!
Like I said before, you Americans are drowning, you can't swim & you still have the arrogance to try and give swimming lessons!
Your country is so messed up, it's not funny & I can't see anything right with your country at all!

You say the reason for all the shootings is because of moral decay, but you still agree with having guns in such a messed up society? You don't make any sense!
