I shot a wooden re-curve bow for a bit, but it was just at a straw target. I think the poundage on that one was around 45 or so.

Shaquille's advice is good, just go to the range and get some pointers from whoever's there regarding how to shoot the bow. You just need to know the position to stand in and what good form generally looks like, then you'll be good to go cuz it's easy stuff. With practice you'll gain the strength required to pull the string back with ease. Some of those compound bows are quite interesting, they're hard to pull back but after you reach a certain point it becomes very easy to hold it in that position because the potential energy is stored in the springs/gears or whatever they're called. Those things are also very powerful, and can easily have more penetrating power than bullets from some guns.

I also shot crossbows, but those really are quite impractical, because they're hard to reload. Well, at least the ones I had were.

There are various reasons why I don't want to get my firearms licence, Allahu A'lem. I went to a shooting range on the Gold Coast earlier this year and it was so expensive...

With archery you don't need a licence and they can be just as fun

Thanks for all the advice, I'll let you all know how I go once I decide on what bow to buy. I'm still doing my research.

Archery sounds cool, especially if you get practice shooting from horseback. Then you'd be able to ride around the city as a vigilante, shooting down crime one arrow at a time. To be classified cool, though, you'd have to use a traditional-style bow - these new-fangled contraptions won't cut it.

    ^Exactly, that's why I used a simple wooden bow.

Also, Nraf! Welcome back bro, may Allah accept all.

I think shooting a bow off of horseback is probably really challenging, I'm sure they used to train a lot back in the day for that.

Btw the guy who showed me the compound bow he uses also showed me the arrow. He hunts deer with it, and this arrow is designed to do as much damage as possible it seems. It starts off with a straight tip, but it has these two spikes on small hinges, and it blossoms into this triple spike tearing machine upon impact. It was something like this:

He told me the deer would pretty much bleed everything out of that wound and become thabihah, but I don't know how all that works.

I'll probably be spending around that but the two are totally different. Hunting with a bow is more challenging and requires more skill in my opinion.

I've decided to buy a compound bow because they seem to be better in all areas compared to the recurve bows. Now to choose the right one.

I went down to Diamond Valley Archers in Yarrambat with my brother this morning to attend a training session. We got to shoot recurve bows and I got the hang of it fairly quickly.

There was even a sister in niqab shooting which was good to see. It's a friendly environment there.

I'm going back on Monday night to shoot a compound bow this time and see how it goes. From there I will decide which bow to purchase insha'Allah.

I just returned from archery practice at the Yarrambat club. I shot a compound bow rated at 30 pounds and also shot one at 40 pounds. They also erected 3D targets (dinosaur) which we got to shoot at so it was good fun alhamdulillah.

I'm looking at some PSE packages (Stinger or Rally) which I'm keen on buying insha'Allah. They come with the basics to get you started (sight, stabilizer, arrow holders, release aid, arrows and a case).

Then I need to purchase some hunting gear and equipment and off I go insha'Allah.
