thank you for the added information sister. I had sent a message via gumtree but have not gotten a reply. did the sister mention why they want to transfer the lease and get out of there so fast? and if you do talk to them again, could you get his email?

I posted an article in another thread about poor vs rich suburbs. It has also helped me get a better idea where to look for stuff. I'd like to avoid poor or ghetto areas, they will make my experience worst. The place this house is in also is a poor suburb/ghetto area. I will need to see if its safe to live there.

I stated that in the other thread that i'm from usa. There are always rich and poor areas and based on those statistics everything else differs as well in terms of cost of living, safety, amenities, etc. I would disagree with you about richest man being PR or citizen, we have citizens here who are living on the streets by the millions. I did ask for accommodations and i do appreciate any leads I get. I"m also researching on my own, no one here told me which suburbs are good vs bad as well as rich vs poor suburbs , i'm trying to find that out on my own because being a student relying on public transportation, safety would be a big concern for me

My experience of the US which is limited to Georgia is that here is very different to the USA. I think what the sis is saying is that whilst the mean income maybe low.. and it be classed as a poor neighbourhood we have less of a class factor than the US seems to.

The areas to watch out for are the public housing areas and other neighbourhoods such as certain areas of Broadmeadows which are known for being drug areas.

If you stick around the suburbs where most of our members are located, you'll find yourself in family focused areas.. there are a lot more recreation opportunities here than I found in the US.

I also think you will feel much safer here than there.. specially as guys.

The closer to the city you live the more you will pay for rent.. so that is not necessarily a reason to look into other areas even if the transport costs go into a zone 2 area so you have to cross zones. My son is looking at relocating to Brunswick but although he will save a lot by moving on transport costs, because we have a unit that is going at a very good price he will end up paying more for accomodation than the combined accomodation/transport costs there.

my suggestion is that once you find places you like.. you can tell us know the suburbs and I'm sure people will let you know if it's a good option for you.

Keep in mind, not all areas have access to all broadband options.. so if that is important to you.. it may pay to run a check on the availablity.

Anyway.. I'm sure now people are on the look out for you.. so insha'Allah together we can help you find something suitable.

Since i'm planning on participating in on campus activities as well may have to meet with groups to study or do projects at abnormal hours, i think something within 15 minute drive would be good. Just so you guys know, i'm still looking....

if you get desperate and cant find somewhere to stay, then I suggest trying to stay in a hotel/motel that offers cheap rooms, sometimes u can get discounts if u stay for $7 days, that way u will be better equipped to find somewhere to stay.

Don't think i'm there yet. I have YMCA in mind but i'm keeping an open mind to see if i can find a bigger place, even if it's a little further.

Don't live in bad areas: Broadmeadows, dallas, Fawkner, Coburg, prestons

Avoid masjid: coburg, iisna, noble park

I have no idea who told you to avoid those areas... they are all the hub of Muslim Melbourne.. there are pockets of bad areas in Broad Meadows.. but Preston, Fawkner, Coburg, and the areas north of them are where many of us live.. and I feel very safe here

There are halal shops, masjids and places to learn your Islam within a very short drive of most of us.. there are much worse areas in Melbourne.

weird, i dunno coburg or noble park so can not comment but what is wrong with iisna?? subhanallah... Maybe look up the organisation before you blacklist it...

Muslims are moving from all over melbourne/sydney and other states to northern suburbs because of closeness to masajid/orgs/transport/halal establishments... depends what is important to you...

Australia is not like America, so yeh there are some idiots in areas like broadmeadows, gangs and what-not but they keep to themselves, fight with each other and stay out of other peoples way and you could live next to a drug dealer for half your life and not know they are a drug dealer..

and half the members here are regulars at IISNA.. so it may be useful to discuss your concerns with them... same with Noble Park.. there are a few brothers on here who are members of Al Faruuq Islamic Centre at Noble Park.

Well what I was told about the masjids is that is there the "extremists" were arrested and where the police spies and keeps tabs on Muslims as well engage in entrapment.

Please don't get paranoid. I used to go and nothing of that sort ever happened, maybe some did get arrested, I don't know much but that must of been years ago. If they tell you to stay away from IISNA, then the same would apply to HIYC. Just go and meet people and if you don't do anything wrong, then you have nothing to be afraid off.

    Btw-did you find accommodation?

Baloney. There's nothing wrong with these places.
