I lost power yesterday but got it back today Al-Hamdulilah.

Anyway, this was the lowlight of yesterday, and it was taking some Qur'aan translation class because I was looking for an easy A. Well apparently everyone who teaches this kind of class in my university (and most likely all universities in the west as a whole) is a die hard Islam hating orientalist, or one of their puppies, which I honestly expected. After this guy was done spewing all kinds of kufr yesterday and making indirect attacks and remarks against the Qur'aan and Prophet , he translated the word "zindeeq" to mean "free thinker" and then said it usually refers to atheists who were "free thinking". The biggest joke was the theory he followed as to why some suwar begin with letters like Alif Lam miim.

Since he only speaks in theories and indirectly, it's not really easy for me to attack what he says, and I didn't go to that class intending to argue. There are a few other Muslims in that class, but they too just listen to what he says, even though they don't like it, they don't really care to argue with him either, especially since he never really directly says much, just implies.

I mean he said Rashad Khalifa was his favorite scholar, what more can I say. And yes, he was pretty bitter when he brought him up. He was also bitter when he brought up the people of Lut (a. s). He's probably going to be quite bitter when he brings up Banu Quraydah no doubt. Honestly the entire time I was tempted to ask "u mad bro?", because Islam is going to continue to flourish despite the haters. But anyway, I'm dropping the class. Craps like that aren't worth my time of day.

Yuck indeed, I felt dirty just listening to this guy, he's a real slimeball. Never outs and says what he wants, just implies heavily so that if you call him out, he can always fall back to what he really meant if need be. He's also very ridiculing of the text at large and thinks he's funny. The thing is, I'm seeing people in class I recognize from other Arabic classes, and while some of them may smile at one or two things he says, some of them (non-Muslims) seem to be very miserable and their faces are even dryer than mine as they listen to him speak. I don't know if he's succeeding in brainwashing them or if they want to smack him as much as I do. He doesn't say "yes", he says "aye", which is fine if you're some bad pirate, but not when you're this soft spoken flamboyant fruitcake.

Anyway, Allah says "and what their breasts conceal is greater", and you can really tell. Sometimes he struggles to control himself in his hatred. He doesn't like me much since I was gruff with him from day one, and have a thoroughly unamused look on my face his entire class. Of course this is because this guy is not amusing or clever in any way. Barely knows Arabic and he wants to talk.

This is why my mum refused to let me do Islamic Studies for University, I said to her I wanted to do it and she looked up the teachers, called the uni's asked if they were Muslim, most replied they were Jews and she goes why learn about Islam from Jews ? They cannot tell you Islam but how they 'think' it is and since Jews hate Muslims the view of Islam to them won't be what Islam is to Muslims.

As much as my mum hates my choice she wouldn't let me get knowledge of my religion from Jews!

Rofl, no it doesn't mean free thinker. It means kaafir, mulhid, and in English it commonly translates to libertine (perverted, morally unrestrained, deviant). It's to denote a low slimeball in general, one who plays with the religion and causes trouble. But hey, I do call him a zindeeq, so maybe he'll take that as a compliment. I'm thinking to see him tomorrow to tell him personally I'm dropping his class. Reason being, I don't find the material interesting. I'm thinking to smile at him and tell him if I wanted to listen to zandaqah, I can do so easily on my own without a 15 page research paper to worry about. He'll take it as a joke no doubt since it was him who brought the term up in class, but he'll know it's one of those jokes where the two parties know exactly what's being said, and they know what they're both thinking.

Ameen. Yeah good call, they will do nothing but try and cast doubt in your religion.

It's too bad, we have a couple of convert women in our class as well as a couple of Arabic born Muslim girls, one of which behaves very disappointingly and goes along to joke with this guy over religious matters. But she's ignorant to an astounding degree, because she could not believe that Sahabah actually memorized the entire Qur'aan, when little does she know that nine year olds all over the world today have the entire thing down, some of them in different narrations as well. Subhaan Allah. The Muslim guys in class are okay, they're MSA people and while they are liberal, I believe them to be decent and good people.

this girl I know that wore hijab went and did Islam studies at Melb uni, ended up taking her hijab off coz the zindeeq professor goes it's not fard and the Qur'an doesn't say hijab is fard, etc.

Interestingly, that myth that Hijab isn't fard was first brought forth as far as I know by a Jewish convert to Islam.. can't remember his name but he converted to Islam and then became a 'scholar'

Yeah I wouldn't bother, unless you do some research and find that it's good. Tbh there's a lot of problems with Islam taught in universities even in Muslim countries sometimes so... I'd be really skeptical about it in a western one.

Didn't know where else to put this...

My brother has a special ring tone assigned to me...some guy with an American accent saying "Warning, this phone has detected an incoming call from a loser, repeat an incoming call from a loser. Please do not attempt to initiate contact".
Whoever remembers death often will find a small amount (of worldly things) sufficient for him; and whoever includes his speech in his deeds will speak little.

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. (Surat al Isra': 27)

Does he have a Muslim name or is he an out and out kafir?

I don't know why Muslim students/parents want some Muslim to learn "Islam" from a kafir prof? Is it like a compulsory course for you guys?

A kafir is a source of NO INFO on Islam. Period.

By the way, all that you mention about him and what someone else said about that leopold weiss guy - the same tradition is carried on at a more advanced level by people like mark hanson, tim winters, and their other subordinates like afroz ali. Their aim is nothing but to corrupt Muslims 'aqidah and preach brown-nosing of the kuffar.

Why all this malice towards others who don't share the same views?

It does not matter at all Muhammad Asad was formerly Jewish. Many people who were Jewish converted during the Prophet (pbuh's) time. What one did in the past is erased upon entering Islam.

Okay, he made a serious error in his commentary about the hijab but that's no reason to malign him like this. Since when do scholars not make mistakes? He still exerted himself to learn Arabic and translated the Qu'ran to the best of his abilities.

A kafir is a source of NO INFO on Islam. Period.
This is not quite accurate since many of our texts including Ibn Kathir's tafsir cite earlier Jewish sources. You find Muslims narrating stories in the ahadeeth as well from Jews. Abdullah ibn Salam for example, was a former rabbi who embraced Islam and he was personally told a story by another rabbi; Zaid Ibn Sa'nah. These can be found in the authentically documented collections in both Al Bayhaqi's Sunnan and Tabarani's Mu3jam.

It is not for us to interpret people's hearts and intentions. Perhaps if we better familiarised ourselves with the vast Islamic traditions (which are largely unread), it will help clarify these matters.
