Assalamu Alaikum!
(If I spelled that right, I'll be so happy. ^__^)
"Kimbia" is a pretty regular pseudonym for me online lately. I'm 19 years old and I live in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. I'm supposed to contact somebody today to arrange a meeting to talk about Islam. I'm just waiting for a more decent hour. So, a bit about me: I want to convert to Islam, and have for a little while now, but I'm finding it very hard to get a proper grip of it from the Internet - it's too expansive and beautiful. So! I've joined this website because I am Aussie Soon-To-Be-Muslim, and I'm sure that being able to ask questions to a wide variety of Muslims will be extremely helpful. That aside, I don't actually know any Muslims on a personal basis (only professionally), and it will be nice to make Muslim friends.
In that vein, I'll tell you about some of my hobbies and interests. I adore cross-stitch, long-stitch and mascot costumes - anything with needlework is something that I really enjoy. I also enjoy video games, particularly on the XBox Live, and I'm extremely fond of music. I actually own a bass guitar and I like to say "I can play it", but a more accurate way of putting it would be "I can pretend to play it". I'm really fond of learning, and have been known to take up short courses just for the sake of learning something, but as I have a full-time job, that's become rather difficult. I'm currently doing a business administration course online.
I'm really looking forward to this! I don't know if there any Arabic ways of saying 'goodbye' that are common among Muslims, so -
See you 'round!
Kimbia.

Hey Sis, Welcome to the forums!! And soon to Islam..

Just reading your post makes me think we have a lot in common! Since you'll be a new revert, I advise you to attend some of IISNA classes-particularly those on Tuesdays and Sundays-as they are done for new Muslims and are starting from the basics. This will particularly help you get going to your journey to Islam.
Care to tell us what got you to be interested in Islam?

Thank you all for welcoming me here!

I'll answer this first because it was asked more than once.
I'm not sure if I can really even articulate it without dragging on for ages and ages -- every time I start to explain what I like about Islam, or what got me interested in it, I start on this whole unrelated story about my first exposure to Islam, et cetera et cetera. I'll give you all the extremely abridged version: I admire the piety and humility within Islam, I (of course) admire the way women are regarded, and as a former Christian, I find the Islamic view of God (and Jesus) is in direct alignment with my own view of God. I figure that if everything matches up, I should go for it!

Haha! I can almost sympathies with too much coffee - I prefer Rockstar drinks. Is it really so simple to become a Muslim as just ... saying it out loud? That's neat. I live in the northern suburbs, yeah, but I don't have a car so I tend to rely on trains. I've looked up both HIYC and IISNA, they look neat. ^__^ Thanks for the resources!

I'm in the northern outer-suburbs.
I've had a look around online and the Preston mosque is the closest to where I live... that I can find online. I'm having trouble finding where any of them are, though. :\ When I say XBox, I pretty much mean All Rock Band, All The Time.
I have XBox Live on my phone as well, and literally all I play there is Plants Vs Zombies.

I don't think I would be able to make it to the Tuesday classes unfortunately, as I work until about 6pm most nights, and I have to rely on trains to get me places these days.
But it sounds like a really good idea, I'm actually pretty sad that it would be unlikely that I'd be able to get there. (Until I save enough money for a car!)

Honestly its that easy, but it needs to be within ur heart , If that's where ur heart is at then goo for it! "you can do iiiiiiit!" Islam isn't just a belief it's a complete way of life but it's only an improvement the better we are and wish to improve ourself. the prophet Muhammad saas said the best of those in the days of ignorance (nonmuslims) are the best of those in Islam (once they become Muslim)

Sister you are welcome to come to HIYC tomorrow evening 7pm to meet up with myself and other sisters, we have a ladies only class with a knowledgeable sheikh every Thursday evening at the HUME ISLAMIC YOUTH CENTRE (HIYC). You can come down and ask the sheikh some questions regarding Islam and if you still choose to become a muslim , then InshALLAH you may take that step there with the support of your fellow brothers and sisters (many of whom are reverts also). The address is Motto Drive, Coolaroo, Melbourne, Australia (the sisters class is upstairs)

Once you become a Muslim, you can also attend the Saturday class set up for reverts or for Muslims who want to get back to learning the basics, the sisters running the class are very supportive and can help you learn how to pray ect.
If you have a facebook account you can also visit http://www.facebook.com/HIYC.ASWJ“I have never debated with a knowledgeable person but beaten him, and I have never debated with an ignorant person but been beaten by him.”

That sounds fantastic! I have the day off work tomorrow on account of the holiday, so I know I can definitely get there on time.
About how far a walk is it from the Roxburgh station, do you know? I just need to keep potential walking shoes in mind...
It would be just fantastic to come down! Is there a dress-code I should observe? I don't have anything to cover my hair with... Who should I speak to? Should I make some sort of booking? ... Am I likely to get lost trying to find the sisters class?
Ooh, now I'm really excited!

Sis, it's not far from Roxy station. I would say 5-7 min at most. Walk towards hungry Jacks and keep walking and you will find it. The sister section is upstairs, so there is a separate door for it, I'm sure you will find it open or other sisters going up there anyway.
As for dress code, just wear what you consider to be modest enough. You can go without a hijab I don't think it's going to be an issue. Oh, and no there is no booking.
Maybe you could take sis 'your sisters' no. or something so you can arrange and meet her?Religion is all about moral character; therefore, whoever beats you in character beats you in religion."

Welcome to the forum Kimbia.
As Muslim...Priincess mentioned, you are very welcome to attend the "Islamic Classes for New Muslims, Those Interested in Islam & Those Who Want to Improve Their Existing Knowledge". These classes are specifically catered for people looking into Islam as well as new Muslims. So, a lot of the questions you may have will be addressed in these sessions. As an example, last session addressed the Islamic view of Jesus, as well as the etiquettes of reading and understanding the Qur'an. There are other non-Muslims as well as newly-reverted Muslim females in the class, so you will have many people to meet and share experiences with.
See the link below for more info:

Look forward to seeing you there.

Allahu akbar. .. Masha'Allah welcome to the family sis! Insha'Allah you will find us all like a family for you. These will be exciting and memorable days and definitely ones you will remember. Stay strong sis and do take things slowly as you learn your new faith. It is the perfect religion.. the perfect way of life.. but because it covers every part of your life, it can seem a little overwhelming .. remember it's your intentions that will help you and enable you to appreciate all that it offers.
Masha'Allah enjoy your new life!! We are all here for you and there to walk with you in whatever ways we can insha'Allah
