I did read that postgrad research students have the public school fee waived for them in victoria so maybe that's why some people are able to put their kids in?

naz - is your husband a postgrad student?
Al-Hasan al-Basri said of hypocrisy: No one fears it but a believer, and no one feels safe from it but a hypocrite.

    Assalamu alaykum,

You don’t need a certificate for prep if you plan to stay in Australia. Many children come from abroad and enrol in Australian schools at much higher levels and they don’t require any certification. They usually get extra/special ESL classes though. Also prep is not compulsory and many parents choose to wait a year before sending their children to school (i.e. at age 6 instead of 5) and it is something that is encouraged by paediatricians and research as the child will be ahead due to his older age. So do not stress too much. If you are really concerned you can homeschool him to keep him up to level. I know many parents who homeschooled their children for the first few years and then put them into school without any problems and without a need for any certification. If there are some subjects you’re not confident teaching you could get him a tutor a few hours a week. It should cost you a lot less than what you quoted above for the Islamic schools.

The following website sends you out all the worksheets and books you will need to homeschool your child for a full year:
