With all this talk about shepherd's pie in another thread, i decided to make some today and thought we could share our recipes, as no doubt it can be done a variety of ways. Here's how i made mine, but i can't give you any quantities sorry.

    Ingredients
    - mashed potato [i think we all know how to make this without a recipe]
    - sweet potato
    - mushroom
    - onion
    - diced lamb
    - plain flour
    - tomato paste
    - sweet soy sauce
    - corn kernels
    - salt to taste
    - shredded cheese

    Method
    - peel and dice sweet potato into small cubes. Slice mushroom and put in a pot with the sweet potato and some water and allow to steam with the lid on until the potato is soft. Remove and set aside.

    - peel and dice onion and fry in some oil in same pot. Add meat and cook until browned.

    - fill a glass half with water, add 1tbs plain flour, 1 tbs tomato paste and sweet soy sauce to your liking. Mix well and add to the meat mixture. Add the sweet potato, mushroom and corn kernels and cook lightly for about 5mins or until it's not too watery. Add salt to taste.

    - Transfer mixture to oven proof dish and top with mashed potato. The meal is cooked but it needs to be heated through, so cover with foil and leave in the oven until heated through. Remove foil and top with shredded cheese and cook until browned.

Looks so nice mashaAllah, much better than mine (which turned out to be a soup, not sure if you heard...>__>).
I like the dish you cooked it in.

can I have the mash potato recipe please ....looks very noice. I used to make it ages ago and chuck vegies like spinach, mushrooms, but I used to cheat and use the maggi mix but not the Sheppard pie mix the sausage and onion one. Also I used deb! yes deb! lol but I actually used it for the taste, this was donkey years ago.

Now I use the real potatoes and stock cubes for taste with flour to thicken. I like it with spinach and mushroom, but I don't add tomato paste, I add abit of paprika powder. I love it with a side of cabbage salad.

This is the first time I've seen shepherds pie with sweet potato. Also without the standard gravy powder & worcestershire sauce . How was it ? Am thinking of making this tomorrow.

I'm all for bid'ah version as long as its for cooking. I looked at the ingredients of gravox at the supermarket. I thought one of the ingredients that was iffy. Maybe I am wrong ?

El Muslima - The traditional and supreme gravox are vegie based from memory. I use the supreme one.

And I agree with Abdraheim - you need worchestershire sauce in shepards pie! yum.

lol Abduraheim!!! Thats exactly what I thought when I was there!! But then again maybe our tastebuds have been spoilt by the choices here. The roast chicken I had around the corner from my uncle's place was like it was baked in the oven, and it came from the coals. The burger with chips in it tasted good though, nice change.
