I am looking into the origin of a popular hadith that relates how a woman threw rubbish at the Prophet on his way to mosque. Sometimes this hadith involves a Jew, sometimes a boy.
I have heard this story is a myth and actually doesn't exist in any collections.
Any insight/references appreciated.
*edit* found it - yes it looks to be a myth:
["One old woman made a habit of throwing rubbish on Prophet Mohammed whenever he passed from her house. Prophet Mohammed had to pass that house daily on the way to the mosque. Even when the old woman threw rubbish on him, he would pass silently without showing any anger or annoyance. This was a regular, daily event. One day when Prophet Mohammed was passing by the woman was not there to throw the rubbish. Prophet Mohammed stopped and asked the neighbor about her well-being. The neighbor informed Prophet Mohammed that the woman was sick and laying on the bed. Prophet Mohammed politely asked permission to visit the old woman. When allowed he entered the house, the old woman thought that he had come there to take his revenge when she was unable to defend herself because of her sickness. But Prophet Mohammed assured her that he had come to her, not to take any revenge, but to see her and to look after her needs, as it was the command of Allah that if any one is sick, a Muslim should visit him and should help him if his help is needed. The old woman was greatly moved by this love and kindness of Prophet Mohammed. By the example of greatness of Prophet Mohammed, she understood that he was truly the Messenger of Allah and Islam was the true religion. She accepted Islam at once by reading the Shahadah (La Ilaha Ill Allah Muhammadur Rasool Allah, There is no god only Allah, Muhammad is the Rasool (Messenger) of Allah)."]

Well you have mentioned 3 hadith not 1. So do you want ahdeeth about the boy who threw trash, the jew who threw trash or the woman who threw the trash in front of the prophet sallaahu alayhi wa salaam? Also I have never heard of a hadith of anyone trowing trash on the prophet sallaahu alayhi wa salaam while going to the masjid. I have heard of trash being dumped on him while he prayed sallaahu alayhi wa salaam. Also I have heard of trash being dumped in front of his house alayhi salatu wa salaam. I am not saying either are hadeeth just saying I heard the.

These hadith are what I term 'Sahih Tabligh'. Twentieth century fabrications. Neither version is to be found in any historical Islamic literature written before the twentieth century. When you consider the story, its absurd. The 'trasher' if in Madina would have lost his/her head by zealous companions and if Makkah, there were no jews living there.
Its part of the 'new amerikan islam' of "yes massa" house slave mentality thats come about due to a revulsion to things Islamic such as found in my siggy by way of example.

These stories are so wide spread even by educated Muslims, preachers etc. This isn't the first time I have heard they are fabricated but it really surprises me to be honest.
"Have they not travelled in the land so that they should have hearts with which to understand, or ears with which to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts."

It surprises me too because I have heard this particular one so many times, especially at dawah events. In fact I've also seen people react quite strongly when they find out this hadith is a myth.
[btw it goes something like "One old woman made a habit of throwing rubbish on Prophet Mohammed whenever he passed from her house.
