Anti-Islamic mail sparks backlash in Heidelberg

A HEIDELBERG resident has labelled leaflets dropped into his mailbox by a national anti-Islamic organisation, as "propaganda' and "bigotry".

Don Stokes contacted the Heidelberg Leader after receiving mail in two consecutive weeks from a group known as the Q Society of Australia.

The Sydney-based group's website stated it believed the "bedrock of this society must remain Judeo-Christian" and "the further Islamisation of our nation" needed to be "stopped and reversed".

"We stand against the creeping infiltration of this socio-political dogma and its medieval concept of religious absolutism," it says.

Mr Stokes said he was shocked to see the leaflets delivered during July.

"My first thought was for those people living in the area who follow Islam and how they might feel," Mr Stokes said.

"This sort of bigotry is not just cowardly and misleading, but illogical and might just fuel prejudices.

"The vibrant diversity of our migrant cultures is what makes Australia such a great place to live."

Society spokesman Andrew Horwood said the information had been distributed in areas where its members lived.

He said about 150,000 flyers had been handed out and letterboxed across Australia since mid-2011. He said it was possible members who lived in Banyule were distributing the pamphlets.

"We hope to inform, create a better understanding and trigger open and free discussions," Mr Horwood said.

Islamic Council of Victoria director Nazeem Hussain said the group divides the community and in no way should be taken seriously.

"I think it's deeply upsetting; an organisation that distributes misinformation like this should be dismissed," Mr Hussain said.

Banyule Mayor Tom Melican said the premise for the Q Society group was completely wrong.

There are a lot of uneducated ignorant scumbags living in Heidelberg West and Heidelberg Heights.

If you drive around some of the streets there where the white trash people living in housing commission are, you will often see Australian flags hung up on windows like curtains.

When the Somalis moved into the area, the racist morons would often pick fights with them. From what I saw, and from the stories i have heard, the ignorant rednecks would always get their backsides kicked.

lol oh I saw some of them at Caltex, they were filling up petrol in front of me and then got in the car and drove up real slow right out of the petrol station...
