Excellent point. I've often wondered the same thing. I've heard (not confirmed though) that there are quite a few Turkish scientists in the US who are experts in their respective fields of medicine and computer science. But my source is a Turk

al-CIA-da I agree with you. We had a great golden age at one time, but since then what has been done? Our lack of mention lately may be because there hasn't been 'as much' in the past hundred years that there was when we were at our zenith.
Neo: I think the difference could be that when we were at our peak, we also had our religion as a strong point in our life. Nowadays we may have Muslims in some areas doing really well, but as a group we're not particularly ahead of anyone in those area. This is probably because back then we did have a Khilafa and a sense of unity, whilst now Muslims are divided up and all over the world without any kind of real interconnectivity.
Just to add though, the doctor that Oprah loves to bring on her show to give demonstrations and talk about various things is a Turk (I'm guessing so because his name is Turkish). Whether he is Muslim or not, I'm not sure.

Well Neo mentioned Turks in the medical field and I remembered this Turkish guy on Oprah (he's always on doing topics about medical issues). I'd guess he's Turkish because his name is Mehmet Oz. He's her favourite doctor.

ya i agree with u guys... back then we were at our highest peak when it comes to science and civilization.. i read in one article that Baghdad was the centre of science.. people from all over the world used to go there to do research and experiements. and look at baghdad now sob7an allah.. so close to having a civil war MUSLIMS AGAINST MUSLIMS!! where did we go wrong?
as for why dont we hear of muslim scientists now.. well u think that CNN will say a muslim scientist has discovered this and that today? no way.. theres no one to give us credit for what we do.. if we do anything.. and also there are many muslim scientists and scholars who live in the west.. because these facilities are not as great in the muslim world as they are in the west.. we r lagging big time in science..! when once we were the greatest civilisation to exist.. we r now so far behind..

Now we need to ask ourselves: "Why?"
The answer? These men were not only scientists they were also men who feared Allah and practiced the Deen. You look at some of their greatest achievements then look to why they studied this field? It was to please Allah and to make life easier for the Muslims.
Those that made such advancements in mathematics done so as to help the Muslims with their zakat, dividing of estates in wills etc.
Those that done such great advancements in geography done so as to help the Muslims in discovering the direction of the Kiblah wherever they are.
If you look to these scientists you find that they were masters of both the Islamic and secular knowledge and they were masters of more then one topic. These people dedicated their lives to studying and teaching.
And their studying would increase their faith in Allah ta3ala.
Eg. Abu Raihan Muhammad Al-Bayruni d.440H (Lived during the days of Mahmud Ghaznavi) said about his studies in geometry and astronomy:
"My experiance in the study of astronomy and geometry and esperiments in physics revealed to me that there must be a Planning Mind of Unlimited Power. My discoveries in Astronomy showed that there are fantastic intricacies in the iniverse which prove that there is a creative system and a meticulous control that cannot be explained through sheer physical and material causes."
And some of them have become famous even in the West but under different names:
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariyya ar-Razi - Rhazes
Abu Walid Muhammad ibn Rushd - Averroes
Ibn Sina - Avicenna
Muhammad Zeng Hi is another who is commonly known as Zeng Hi though in Chinese his name was spelt Mo Zeng Hi as they could not spell 'Muhammad'.
As for the recent era the first rocket ever shot was by a Turkish scientist and that was during the days of the Ottomans.
Dalool Sunni and Shia have been killing each other in Iraq for 1300 years. Even during the Golden Era this was going on, especially just before the rise of the Seljuks when the Shia prime ministers were forcing the Sunnis to practice the Ashura celebrations.
We are still the greatest civilisation to exist, we are the only one practicing Tawheed and upon the Haqq, what could be greater then this? We want greatness look to our Deen, it was nothing but Islam that gave greatness to our predessors and only Islam can give us greatness."Man rejoices as long as the nights continue to pass by,
Yet, he too, as they vanish gradually perishes away. "
